A sworn or certified translation – aka asseverazione in Italian – is the translation of certificates – birth, marriage or residence certificates, marital status certificates – wills, qualifications, legal acts, contracts, letters of appointment and of any document whose translation requires an official certificate regarding the compliance, accuracy and authenticity of the translated text compared to the original one.

It entails great professionalism and precision, a deep knowledge of the law system and a strong sense of responsibility.

To swear to the validity of a translation I go to Court, I bring the translation document along with the original one to the Clerk’s office and, by signing an oath, I take full responsibility for the translation that I completed personally.

For a sworn translation to be legally binding abroad it must be legalized. Indeed, to recognize the corresponcence of a translated text with the original one is not enough. Both the signature and qualification of the official (Justice of the Peace, Notary Public or lawyer) who stamped the oath must be legalized, too.

Legalization is a bureaucratic procedure which I carry out upon my clients’ specific request, by personally going to the Prefettura (Local Government office) where, after appropriate checks, a duty stamp is placed on the documents.
